Coates' research focuses on the hormonal basis of financial decision making, inspired by his own experiences trading. He describes how men trading "display what may be called the classical clinical symptoms of mania. The Hour Between Dog and Wolf, was also short listed for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year. It was also chosen as book of the month by the Magazine of the British Army. The journal, Foreign Policy, named him one of the most influential thinkers of the year.
