The Wellcome Book Prize 2018 is now open for submissions

The Wellcome Book Prize is now open for submissions for its 2018 award.

UK-based publishers or imprints can submit up to three books scheduled for publication between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2017. The deadline for submissions is 8 September 2017.

Worth £30,000, the Prize celebrates the best new books that engage with some aspect of medicine, health or illness, showcasing the breadth and depth of our encounters with medicine through exceptional works of fiction and non-fiction. ‘Mend the Living’ by Maylis de Kerangal, translated by Jessica Moore (MacLehose Press, fiction) won this year’s award, with a judging panel chaired by author Val McDermid.

To be eligible for entry, a book should have a central theme that engages with some aspect of medicine, health or illness. The Prize crosses genres: fiction and non-fiction are both eligible, so entries can include biography, crime, historical fiction, current affairs, sci-fi and more.

The judges for the 2018 Prize will be announced in the autumn. The Wellcome Book Prize will longlist twelve books in January 2018, shortlist six books in March 2018 and the winner will be announced in April 2018.

The entry form can be downloaded here, and you can keep up to date with the latest Prize news on Twitter.
